Belli’s music, which calls for great vocal agility, is striking in its bold chromaticism, its use of false harmonic relationships, its unusual dissonances and the peculiarity of its melodic lines. An audacious composer, Belli regularly used complex means in setting to music the highly expressive poems of Tasso, Petrarch and Cavaliero Marino. His disregard for traditional rules of composition made him the most surprising and radical exponent of monody of his time.
